Bob teaches fiddle, banjo, mandolin and guitar at the Fifth String on North Pleasantburg Drive in Greenville, SC. 864-242-5428. Bob Buckingham started playing guitar in 1964. He took lessons from Herm Johnson, a first call musician for artists like Chet Atkins. Herm played a lot of big shows with Chet and many other artists during his career. His method of teaching involved instructing the student in an intuitive approach to theory that opened up doors to understanding music as a whole and not just one style of music. Having learned music that way, that approach is at the heart of how Bob thinks and teaches his students. Over the past forty years Bob has played and taught banjo, both clawhammer and bluegrass styles, fiddle in both styles, as well as mandolin. He also teaches guitar in finger-picked and flat-picked styles. Bob has played in several bluegrass and old time bands and fronted his own Chicago style blues band way back in the 1960's. During that time he also played with a soul band and a gospel group.. Having formed American Standard in 1973 with high school friends, he played with them and several other bluegrass bands through the eighties until 2000. During that period he formed two old time bands, Far Fetched in the 1980's and the Contra Rebels in early 1992.. The Rebels continue today under separate leadership. Bob has two CD’s to his credit, "My Friend is a Mule in the Mines" on Dark Holler, and "Late For Supper", with Todd Clewell on Happy Dog Records. He also appears on Jerry Correll’s "Dandy Tunes and Banjo Friends" on the Heritage label and on "Bob Hill, Old Time Fiddler" on Happy Dog. |
